There are currently more than 6 million people in the UK that are caring for a friend or loved one, that’s around 1 in 8 adults.
Approximately 2 million people become a carer each year with around 175,000 of those being young carers under the age of 18.
Research in 2007 by Leeds University found that carers save the economy £87 billion per year, an average of £15,000 per carer.
3 in 5 people will at some point in their lives become a carer.
Life expectancy is rising with many more people living into old age, care is therefore part of the ‘social contract’ and over the life course we are all likely to give and receive care.
